Open Educational Resources
Open Educational Resources (OER) offer numerous benefits for students, making them a valuable addition to the educational landscape. OERs are teaching and learning materials that are freely available for use, reuse, adaptation, and sharing. OERs have been shown to increase student learning while breaking down barriers of affordability and accessibility.
What is OER?
Open Educational Resources (OER) are defined in Texas Education Code, Section 51.451, as teaching, learning, or research resources that are in the public domain or that have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use, adaptation, and redistribution by any person. The term may include full course curricula, course materials, modules, textbooks, media, assessments, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques, whether digital or otherwise, used to support access to knowledge.
OER provides the opportunity for educators to learn from others and develop innovation and excellence, through selecting course materials that fit what we need in our classrooms. It also assists in making textbooks affordable and accessible for students.
Finding and Utilizing OER
Faculty interested in exploring OER options can utilize Angelo State’s library OER LibGuide, which provides general information to help find and evaluate OER for potential use in your courses.
You can also reference Popular OERs by Discipline LibGuide for more specialized assistance. Here, you’ll find a variety of OER repositories. Repositories are where the open access materials are stored. You may find “single-serving” OER - these tend to be smaller than a full textbook. Or, you may find full textbooks available for you to pull from. To get more help with your OER search, visit the Porter Henderson Library webpage to connect with an Angelo State’s Librarian.
Once you have selected an OER, the CDLI can meet with you about how best to add the resource to your course. Contact the CDLI to schedule a consultation.
