An Afternoon with Phil George

There’s no one like Phil George. He would chuckle and deflect the compliment. However, he is one of the most accomplished and admired figures in Angelo State University’s athletics history. We asked Phil to spend an afternoon with Tom Nurre, news and information specialist at Angelo State University

In this video tribute to the coach, athletics director, military pilot and gentleman, we try to encompass the enormous role Phil played in the growth and success of Angelo State. He continues to represent ASU throughout the community as a class act.

Tom uncovers stories all the way back to 1949 when Phil first joined the staff at San Angelo College. Phil shares his experiences as a coach of many sports and the joy of winning a national basketball championship in 1957. He recalls his love for flying and talks about his time as a pilot in World War II, as well as being called back to active Air Force Reserve duty in Vietnam.

Grab some popcorn and enjoy learning more about Phil George, truly an Angelo State legend.
