Accounting Professor Selected for Endowed Chair

The Low Family Chair in Accounting was established through a $1 million gift from ASU alum Mark Low, CEO of Juno Energy in Plano. An endowed chair is the most prestigious academic appointment available for university faculty and includes funding to supplement the holder’s scholarly research and public service activities, as well as support student professional development.

Dr. Russell “Rusty” Calk “I would like to thank Mark Low and the Low Family for the generous gift to Angelo State,” Calk said. “I am honored to be selected as the first Low Family Chair. The endowment will no doubt have a positive impact on the recruitment and development of high-quality accounting students and faculty at ASU.”

An ASU faculty member since 2020, Calk will hold the Low Family Chair for a five-year term and will then be eligible to re-apply. His appointment was approved by ASU President Ronnie Hawkins Jr. on the recommendation of Dr. Andrew Tiger, dean of the NVCOB.

Dr. Andrew Tiger “Since joining Angelo State and the Norris-Vincent College of Business,” Tiger said, “Dr. Rusty Calk has set a high standard in the classroom while also serving as a thought leader in the accounting discipline, publishing in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals, as well as co-authoring with other NVCOB faculty.”

An associate professor in the NVCOB’s Department of Accounting, Economics and Finance (AEF), Calk teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in financial, managerial and cost accounting; accounting research, theory and ethics; writing for accountants; international accounting; and advanced management accounting. He has also published over 20 research articles in various industry journals, and he is an ad-hoc reviewer of articles for Advances in Business Research, the Global Journal of Business Disciplines and the Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology. He has also made numerous presentations at professional conferences.

Prior to joining the ASU faculty, Calk was an associate professor of accounting and department chair at Texas A&M University-Central Texas, and he has also taught at New Mexico State University, University of Texas Permian Basin and Oklahoma State University.

Among his many awards and honors, Calk has multiple teaching awards from his time at New Mexico State, as well as a Best Manuscript Award from the American Accounting Association. He is a member of the American Accounting Association, the Association of Accountants and Financial Professionals in Business, and the Beta Alpha Psi (accounting) and Sigma Beta Delta (business) national honor societies.

Calk earned his Bachelor of Business Administration (1991) and Master of Business Administration (1992) degrees at Angelo State and holds a Ph.D. in accounting from Oklahoma State University.
