Inaugural Cybersecurity Camp for Area Students

Angelo State University’s Department of Computer Science will host its inaugural CyberCamp@ASU, an Air Force Association (AFA) CyberCamp for local and area junior high and high school students, June 20-24 in the ASU Mathematics-Computer Science Building at 2200 Dena Drive.
The interactive, five-day camp is free and open to students interested in cybersecurity. It will feature software and hands-on curriculum designed to teach students about cyber safety, cyber ethics, and critical network security skills and tools. Daily sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be tailored to the students’ levels of experience.
The camp will culminate with an exciting team-based competition that puts the students in the role of IT administrators tasked with finding and addressing cybersecurity vulnerabilities in simulated network environments. The competition will closely mimic AFA’s annual CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Defense Competition.
Instructors for the camp will include ASU computer science faculty and cybersecurity professionals from the Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Technology (CIAS) at the University of Texas at San Antonio. The camp will also feature visits to ASU’s Hunter Strain Engineering Labs, Information Technology Department and other campus departments where the students will learn about educational pathways available in cybersecurity.

“CyberCamp 2022 at ASU is an important part of our two-year-long project, supported by a grant from the NSA and in partnership with UTSA’s CIAS, to develop programs in the greater San Angelo community toward cybersecurity awareness and cybersecurity workforce development,” said Dr. Scarlet Clouse, dean of the ASU College of Education and the project’s ASU director.
By focusing on CyberPatriot curriculum, CyberCamp@ASU will also provide the students with entry-level knowledge and activities to promote increased participation on CyberPatriot teams in local and area school districts.
In conjunction with the CyberCamp for students, ASU will host a free Teacher’s Workshop to train local and area middle, junior high and high school teachers in cybersecurity. The workshop will also take place June 20-24 on the ASU campus, and participating teachers will also have opportunities to observe the student camp sessions.
