Placement and Arrival
Placement
Students are placed at the appropriate level of ASU’s English Language Learners’ Institute by doing ONE of these things:
- Submitting an official test score from the TOEFL, IELTS or TOEIC exam with your admission packet
- Taking a placement exam upon your arrival in San Angelo
If you take a placement exam after you arrive, or wish to retest once you get to ASU, the English Language Learners’ Institute will administer those tests. Your highest test score will be used to determine your level and coursework.
Based on the standardized test you complete, we use this scale to place you at the appropriate level:
Level 4 | Level 5 | Level 6 | |
---|---|---|---|
CEFR | B1 | B1 | B2 |
PBT | 433-462 | 463-496 | 497-547 |
TOEFL iBT | 40-49 | 50-59 | 60-68 |
TOEFL ITP | 400-449 | 450-499 | 500 or Higher |
IELTS | 4-4.5 | 4.5-5 | 5.5 |
TOEIC* | 500-599 | 600-699 | 700 or Higher |
Duolingo | 60-74 | 75-84 | 85-95 |
Arrivals
New students are required to attend ELLI and immigration orientations. Arrival times are published in advance of new terms.
Students who are late for orientation and testing (if necessary) will be fined $100 as this creates additional processing time.
