Area Competition
Dawn Hahn
Dawn is a graduate of North Texas State University with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and enjoyed teaching music in Texas public schools for 40 years before officially retiring. Currently, Dawn teaches part-time music for Mason ISD and continues to direct and perform in community theater while also offering private piano and voice lessons.
As the theater director for Mason High School’s One Act Play Company for three years, Dawn led the team to two 1A State Meet appearances—2010 (2nd runner-up play) and 2013 (1st runner-up play). Before directing at the high school level, Dawn directed Mason Junior High’s One Act Play for two years, achieving success with both productions. In addition to directing, Dawn enjoys contest managing for UIL One Act Play competitions.
Through years of involvement in UIL One Act Play—as an audience member, a parent and a director—Dawn has come to appreciate that the competition is much more than producing a play; it is a life-changing experience for all who embark on the journey.
Sherran Geistmann
Sherran Geistmann has been involved in directing one-act plays and coaching academic UIL events for over 30 years. She was the recipient of the UIL Sponsor Excellence Award in 2005-06. Sherran believes in the educational value and life lessons gained by participating in one-act play. Three state appearances and numerous area and regional appearances have taught her the importance and necessity of respecting directorial choices and student commitment. Students and directors will be honored in her critiques and offered input that demonstrates preparation and seriousness in delivering the best evaluation. She feels earning a B.A. and M.A.T. do not compare to the knowledge acquired through yearly participation in UIL Super Conferences, summer workshops and camps, advisory committees, and district, regional and state contests. Furthermore, she feels wisdom and empathy have been attained by working with students during the past 32 years. Students have taught her the most and have given countless blessings that she would like to share through continued involvement in one-act play as a respected adjudicator.
Patsy Hall
Patsy Hall has taught and directed OAP and theatre classes from the large Frenship district to the smallest of the small, Richland Springs district. She understands the difficulties and the advantages of different sizes, different support systems, and different finances of schools in Texas. She piloted the Digital Theatre course for TEA and represented all 1A and 2A schools. Patsy Hall has been a member of TETA and served on various committees for many years. She served on committees for the Texas Cultural Trust and won the Outstanding Teacher of the Humanities of Texas award. Patsy Hall’s love for teaching and for theatre stems from her childhood when she taught her dolls and directed them and her family in performances. Hall enjoys young people and interacting with them. She believes the arts are an integral, important element of education. Hall states, “Lives are made better, and often people find healing for themselves through involvement in theatre.”
Region Competition
Deborah Shaw
The director of fine arts for Midland ISD, Deb Shaw has an extensive background in UIL Academics and One-Act Play. As a theatre director, she has had OAP companies appear at the State Meet three times winning first with The King Stag, second with Our Country’s Good and third with Beggar’s Opera. She has also served as a critic judge, contest manager and stage manager for district, area, region and state OAP contests. In 2014, Shaw served as an adjudicator for the Southeastern Theatre Conference’s High School Festival. A graduate of the University of North Texas, Shaw was recognized as a UNT Outstanding Alumna in 2004 and was voted Most Inspirational Teacher by the senior class at Denton High School in 2002. She was inducted into the inaugural class of Texas Thespians Hall of Fame in 2011 and went on to win the Alma Slawinski Award of Excellence in 2013.
Charles (Gary) Cooper
Gary serves as the director of fine arts for Comal ISD in New Braunfels. He formally served as an associate professor, head of theatre education and lead recruiter for the University of Houston Theatre and Dance Department. Previously, he was a high school theatre teacher and department chair for 19 years, mostly in Klein ISD. He has been involved in the UIL OAP as a student, advancing to State twice, and as a director, advancing to 6A Area and Region numerous times. He has a passionate love of the Arts. Gary strongly believes in the educational aspect of the UIL process, and because of this, transitioned from directing OAP to Adjudicating/Contest Managing once he moved from teaching at the secondary level. He has served on the TTAO board as Treasurer, the TTAO Standards and Practices Committee and the board of TxETA.
Patty MacMullen
Certification in gifted/talented education/Lamar University
Patty MacMullen directed both high school and middle school theatre for four decades. While teaching in public schools, her students advanced to the UIL OAP State Meet five times placing third in conference 4A in 1999 and again in 2007. In 2012, her students advanced to the state championship contest in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools, placing first runner up for the state championship title. MacMullen’s students also won the TAPPS state championship in Duet Acting in 2019. She has directed productions that were chosen to perform at the Texas State Thespian Festival Main Stage, the International Thespian Festival Main Stage, the Chapter Select Showcase as the Texas representative at the International Thespian Festival, and the Edinburgh Scotland Fringe Festival in 2011, 2015 and 2018. In 2020, MacMullen’s students were invited by the Manhattan Theatre Club’s Education Department to participate in Theatrelink, a curriculum-based project that connects high school students around the world for a five-month period to create and study theatre together. Writing has become one of MacMullen’s passions. She is a co-author of the Maestro Theatre Publications educational resources and is a published playwright. MacMullen has directed theatre programs in UIL conferences 3A, 4A, 5A and TAPPS 4A and has experienced the UIL one act play contest as a student, director, host, clinician, contest manager and adjudicator. She was honored to be one of the 2023 state 1A adjudicators. In 2011, MacMullen was inducted into the Texas Thespians Hall of Fame. She retired in 2021 as the Fine Arts Director and Director of Theatre at Hill Country Christian Upper School in Austin.

Roberta Moglia – Contest Manager
Roberta Moglia taught, directed and competed in all classifications (A-6A) of Texas high schools for 20 years. While teaching and directing, she advanced to all levels of competition and placed third in 2009 at the State Meet with “Agnes of God.” Her love for the One Act Play contest began as a freshman in high school because this was the only show each year in her 3A town. Currently, she is the auditorium/facility manager for San Antonio College which still allows her to assist technically with various productions, event manage, and ultimately, be surrounded by the performing arts every day. As a certified contest manager, Moglia strives to ensure that each contest maintains an enjoyable and calm atmosphere while each company is allowed to perform at its highest level.
