Nursing Program Outcomes

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) Program Outcomes

Upon program completion, the B.S.N. graduate will be prepared to:

  1. Integrate nursing and related theories into the planning and/or delivery of safe nursing care.
  2. Engage leadership concepts, skills and decision-making in the planning and/or implementation of patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.
  3. Identify and appraise best research evidence to improve and promote quality patient outcomes.
  4. Utilize technology to access information, evaluate patient data and/or document care.
  5. Participate in political/legislative processes to influence healthcare policy.
  6. Engage in effective collaboration and communication within interdisciplinary teams.
  7. Design and/or implement health-promotion and disease-prevention strategies for culturally competent care.
  8. Demonstrate standards of professional, ethical and legal conduct.
  9. Practice and/or coordinate, at the level of the baccalaureate-prepared nurse, to plan and/or implement patient-centered care.

Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) Program Learning Outcomes

To achieve the outcomes, the M.S.N. program is guided by the AACN Essentials (2021) document on graduate education. Our program provides students with an opportunity to achieve the following competencies:

  1. Integrate knowledge from nursing, liberal arts, and natural and social sciences into the delivery of advanced nursing care.
  2. Perform person‐centered care to diverse individuals within multiple complicated contexts, including family and/or important others.
  3. Deliver equitable and inclusive healthcare along the public health disease prevention and management continuum via collaborative activities.
  4. Generate, synthesize, translate, apply and disseminate nursing knowledge to improve health and transform healthcare.
  5. Employ the principles of safety and improvement science in advanced nursing practice.
  6. Collaborate professionally with care team members, patients, families, communities and other stakeholders.
  7. Coordinate resources to provide safe, quality and equitable care to diverse populations.
  8. Utilize information and communication technologies and informatics processes to provide care, gather data and form information to drive decision making.
  9. Conduct oneself as an advanced-level nurse exemplifying nursing’s characteristics and values.
  10. Participate in activities and self‐reflection that foster personal health, resilience, well‐being and lifelong learning, and support the acquisition of nursing expertise and assertion of leadership.

M.S.N. Program Track Competencies

In addition to meeting the M.S.N. program learning outcomes, the specific tracks offered by the Department of Nursing are developed according to field-specific competencies.

Master’s and Post-Master’s Family Nurse Practitioner

Students completing the M.S.N. Family Nurse Practitioner track/Post-Master’s Certificate will possess the 10 Nurse Practitioner Role Core Competencies identified by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) amended in 2022. These competencies include:

  1. Knowledge in Practice
  2. Person-Centered Care
  3. Population Health
  4. Practice Scholarship and Translational Science
  5. Quality and Safety
  6. Inter-professional Collaboration of Practice
  7. Health Systems
  8. Technology and Information Literacy
  9. Professional Acumen
  10. Personal and Professional Leadership

Master’s and Post-Master’s Nurse Educator

Students completing the M.S.N. Nurse Educator track/Post-Master’s Certificate will possess the eight core competencies identified in the National League of Nursing’s “NLN core competencies for nurse educators: A decade of influence” (Halstead, 2019). These competencies include:

  1. Facilitate Learning.
  2. Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization.
  3. Use Assessment and Evaluation Strategies.
  4. Participate in Curriculum Design and Evaluation of Program Outcomes.
  5. Function as a Change Agent and Leader.
  6. Pursue Continuous Quality Improvement in the Nurse Educator Role.
  7. Engage in Scholarship.
  8. Function within the Educational Environment.
