Discovery Camps are designed for students entering grades 9, 10 or 11 this August who are interested in exploring an exciting and rewarding career in nursing.
Angelo State Nursing Discovery Camps have two areas of emphasis, each with its own objectives.
Discover Nursing
Students will be immersed in the world of nursing and nurse education. They will:
Learn from ASU nursing faculty and students.
Interact with practicing RNs in different specialty areas.
Learn basic nursing skills.
Experience how nurses use knowledge of anatomy and physiology, math and systems to care for patients.
Gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art, AI-supported patient simulators.
Interact with healthcare team members - physical therapists, social workers, athletic trainers and counseling psychologists.
Learn more about ASU and our Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) program.
Complete American Heart Association CPR and First Aid training.
Discover You
We will help you plan for the best 9th, 10th or 11th grade year ever by exploring a variety of topics, including:
Developing a Self-Care Plan
Developing effective communication skills
Team building
Time management
Study skills
Engaging in your high school community
Engaging in your local community
What to Expect
While the main objectives of the camps are educational, they also meant to be fun. Activities will include:
Rock wall climbing
Swimming
Movie night
Game night
Afternoon recreation and social time
Please note, students are not allowed to leave campus during the camp. Once students are dropped off, we provide a safe and controlled atmosphere. Besides, you’re at camp! Take this opportunity to get to know other campers and enjoy the facilities.
Students will be under constant supervision by Summer Nursing Discovery Camp staff, including ASU faculty, staff and students. Your student’s safety and well-being are our utmost concern.
Students will be housed in ASU’s award-winning Plaza Verde residence hall.
All meals will be served in the university cafeteria, The CAF, featuring an all-you-can-eat buffet and various specialty dining options. It is just a short walk from Plaza Verde.
Camper Handbook
Check-in will run from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, for the 9th grade camp and on Sunday, July 6, for the 10th and 11th grade camp, at the Plaza Verde residence hall. Camp counselors will be there to direct you where to park and help you sign in. Please do not unload luggage at this time.
Dinner will be served to all campers on that first Sunday from 5-6:15 p.m. in The CAF. Camp activities will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a general camp meeting in Plaza Verde.
Arriving on time is essential. Students must be checked in to the camp and moved into their rooms before the 6:30 p.m. camp meeting begins. We will hand out the schedules when you check in, and then go over the camp goals and safety items at the camp meeting.
One Note: Camp activities will conclude at 9:30 p.m. each night.
A great attitude, excitement to learn and desire to make new friends.
Two bed sheets, one blanket, one pillow, one pillowcase, towels, washcloths, deodorant and other personal toiletry items. (Optional: sleeping bag instead of sheets/blanket)
Comfortable jeans, athletic pants or shorts, and shoes suitable for indoor labs and outdoor activities.
A swim suit for pool activities. We will be using the university pool.
Please label your luggage with your name and address using luggage tags or masking tape. A small quantity of snacks is okay, but there are vending machines available. Change for the vending machines is helpful. HINT: $15 is probably not enough, $100 is too much.
All students must wear their camp lanyard for the entire week. We will hand out the lanyards when you check in. The lanyard serves as your meal ticket, general camp I.D., and access to your room in Plaza Verde.
Campers can bring cell phones to campus. During learning activities and presentations, cell phones are to be placed in silent mode.
Each afternoon, students will have recreation/free time in and around Plaza Verde. Basketball hoops, board games and pool tables will be available. Students are encouraged to bring games and other activities to do during these times. Meeting new people and making new friends will be strongly encouraged. The students will be under constant supervision by camp staff.
Check out from Plaza Verde will begin immediately following the camp slide show and Simulation Labs tours (approx. 12 p.m.). Please meet your students at Plaza Verde to get all luggage to your vehicle. Once you have loaded your student’s belongings and have checked out, you are free to leave.

Any cancellations made after May 30 shall be considered forfeited in favor of the camp and will not receive a refund.
Cancellations after the start date of a class will not receive a refund. Nor can we offer a refund or credit for late, non-arrival, or early withdrawal after the start date of any class.
Medical Cancellation: All campers are subject to the above policies; however, concessions will be made in the event of an unavoidable medical cancellation. Should you need to cancel your registration on medical grounds, we ask that you provide a signed medical note from your physician and that you contact the Camp Director directly to discuss the cancellation. In a case of major illness, injury or serious family situation while at camp, refunds will be provided minus administrative fees and the days spent at camp.
