Project Lifecycle

At Angelo State University, there are four phases within a project’s Lifecycle before the project will be considered complete and operational. These phases are Initiation, Planning, Implementation, and Close Out.

Within each of these four phases, there are many processes which must be completed before a project can move into the next phase. PMI Project Management Standards suggest that the 5 process control groups should be used to define these processes within each phase of a project for a successful implementation. These process control groups are defined as follows: Initiating processes, planning processes, executing processes, monitoring and controlling processes, closing processes,

Within each Project Management Process Group, there are many processes that can be used to manage a project. Based on the classification of each project, different combinations of processes should be used to successfully complete the project. Some factors included in this measurement of classification include complexity of scope, risk, size, time frame, institutional experience, access to resources, maturity, and industry and application area. This information is all gathered through the Initiation Phase of the Project Lifecycle.
