Additional Flight Operations Requirements
There are additional items required to fly at Angelo State and some documents that must be provided prior to beginning any flight instruction.
Additional Requirements
These items require additional expenses, not calculated into the student’s tuition, but are nonetheless vital to every Commercial Aviation student’s education. These investments are necessary for every pilot at Angelo State to succeed.
- Annual First/Second Class Medical certificate, obtained from an approved Aviation Medical examiner (AME). Ranging from $150 -$200.
- FAA Written Exams, currently $180 for Private, Instrument, Commercial, Flight Instructor, and Fundamentals of Instruction.
- Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) fee. Each practical exam (Commonly referred to as a “check-ride”) ranges from $700-$900, depending on the exam and the individual DPE.
- Required Aircraft Rental Insurance Policy (We recommend AVEMCO). Each student is required to have aircraft renters insurance, $560 annually.
- Foreflight flight planning application (Purchased through Skyline’s group subscription). For Private students: $205 annually. For Instrument & Commercial: $450 annually. Students will reimburse Skyline for their annual subscriptions.
- Personal Aviation Headset. Aviation headsets range from $200-$1000 and are required for flight training. Ensure you purchase a dual-plug headset or dual-plug headset adaptor.
- Books & Additional Materials (Pilot training supplies). These materials will be gathered by Skyline. For first-year students, the estimated cost is $650, and every year after is $250. Students will reimburse Skyline for these materials.
- Additional Flight Hours. It is common for students to exceed the allotted flight hours included in their tuition. Additional flight training hours can be purchased through Angelo State University and cost $222.37 per hour.
Required for First Day of Class
Students are required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to have the following documentation prior to beginning any flight instruction.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Birth certificate (Must be original copy)
- Current FAA Medical Certificate, signed by an Aviation Medical Examiner (Must be original copy)
Due to FAA regulations, it is necessary that you bring your current government-issued photo ID (i.e., driver’s license) showing your full legal name spelled out in its entirety.
Without the above documents on file, we cannot legally begin flight training with any student, so be sure to come prepared with these documents.
You can expect to complete the Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application (IACRA) on the first day of class. This process will grant you your Student Pilot certificate if you do not already have one. Be sure to take note of your username and password, as they will be vital later in your training.
