As ASU’s women’s teams evolved, the name Rams did not seem entirely appropriate and Lady Rams was, well, a contradiction of terminology and nature. Neither did the term “ewe,” pronounced “you” and the name for a female sheep of any breed.

Consequently, the search began for an appropriate name that the ASU women could go by in their athletic competitions. Ultimately, the university selected a name unique among all collegiate athletics programs nationally, the Rambelles.

Technically, of course, no such creature as a Rambelle exists anywhere except upon the playing fields and courts of ASU and anywhere else the women´s teams travel.

The Rambelles have won numerous Lone Star Conference titles over the years, as well as two national titles - the 2004 NCAA Division II National Softball Championship and the 2010 NCAA D-II Outdoor Track and Field Championship. And though not officially a “national championship,” the Belles volleyball team won the 2021 AVCA D-II National Tournament at the end of the COVID-shortened season.
