Amidst the modern art pieces installed around the campus are several chainsaw carvings that provide a decidedly rustic motif and celebrate several other ASU traditions.

The first chainsaw carving of ASU’s live mascot, Dominic, was completed in the spring of 2014 by Cam Dockery, owner of Bearly Making It Chainsaw Carvings in Whitharral. Several others have followed, including a statue of ASU’s costumed mascot, Roscoe, along the university mall, a carving of the University Seal next to the Mayer Administration Building, and a statue at the ASU Ranch portraying the Rambouillet sheep and Spanish goats raised by students at the ranch.

Unfortunately, the original carving of Dominic eventually deteriorated and had to be removed. Students gathered for a memorial service to bid a fond farewell to a beloved presence on campus.

The remaining chainsaw carvings continue to be a perfect way to both decorate the campus and honor the majestic trees used for the carvings that previously towered over the campus for decades, as well as to inspire pride in the Ram Fam.

They are also ideal spots for selfies, as well as family and graduation photos.
