Understanding SB:11 Campus Carry Law
How ASU is Addressing Carrying Concealed Handguns on Campus
A law passed by the 84 th Texas Legislature and effective Aug. 1, 2016, changes the approach to carrying a concealed handgun on higher education campuses in Texas. The law is often referred to as “campus carry,” but it is officially Texas Senate Bill 11: Carrying of Handguns by License Holders on Certain Campuses.
The legislation mandated that the president of each university, with input from the campus community, establish reasonable rules, regulations, or other provisions regarding the carrying of concealed handguns by license holders on the campus of the institution or on the premises located on the campus of the institution.
A Campus Carry Committee developed a policy for Angelo State University as required by the State. ASU Operating Policy 02.10: Concealed Carry of Handguns on Campus became official following a review by the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents, which was required by law, at a called meeting in April 2016.
Further, all employees of the campus community are required to complete a training module on campus carry rules and regulations as prepared by our Office of Human Resources and available on Blackboard.
