Mary Rich was born and raised in Waco, Texas. She was the last of nine children. Rich married her husband at the age of eighteen. He was nineteen and serving in the Army at Fort Bliss at the time. They had two daughters together. When her husband, Billy, was sent to Korea, she and her daughters moved back to Waco.
