Dr. Jonathan D. Alvis is Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at Angelo State University where he directs the Wind Ensemble and Ram Band (marching band), oversees the entire band area, and is the director of the Summer Band Camp. A native of Athens, WV, Alvis received the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in 2009 with a concentration in Trombone Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where his primary teachers were Dr. Randy Kohlenberg (trombone) and Dr. John R. Locke (conducting). He also received the Master of Music degree from UNCG and the Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Concord University (Athens, WV).
Prior to ASU, Alvis was Director of Athletic Bands and Associate Professor of Music at the University of South Dakota (Vermillion). At USD, Alvis directed the Concert Band, The SOUND of USD (marching band), Basketball Pep Band, and low brass ensembles, and taught private trombone, euphonium, and tuba lessons as well as courses in music education. During his time at USD, The SOUND received two invitations to perform in the prestigious London, England New Years Day Parade. The SOUND was also in high demand as the exhibition band at regional festivals. Alvis is in high demand as a conductor, consultant, clinician, performer, arranger, and drill writer across the US.
