The primary focus of my research project is to identify potential candidates to replace the common petroleum- based solvents in small-scale natural products extractions and purification and broaden our understanding of the solvent-analyte interaction mechanism. Although the use of traditional solvents such as hydrocarbons and halogenated solvents are common in the analytical techniques, their toxicity, volatility, and environmental persistence are of high concern. The sustainable schemes and strategies that my research group develops would address the environmental concerns without compromising the performance of the chemical processes.
