February 20, 2025

She includes an eye-opening look at what the world of journalism can be like, covering the pitfalls and challenges that young journalists often face – and how to overcome them.

“Tough love. Straightforward information. Insight from lived experiences. If you are thinking about pursuing a career in journalism, specifically the broadcast news industry, read this book first,” Scott said. “You will get a crash course on what to expect when entering the business and how to make yourself stand out from the other candidates vying for the same position. You will also learn a few things they do not teach you in college. This book will tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. However, you will feel prepared and be encouraged to chase your dream by the time you are finished reading.”

“New to News” is available for online purchase through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Apple Books. It is also for sale in-store at Old Town Books in San Angelo.

A native Texan and two-time graduate of ASU’s Department of Communication and Mass Media, Scott earned her bachelor’s (2011) and master’s (2021) degrees in communication. She began her journalism career in 2011 and has worked at all three San Angelo TV stations, doing every job there is in the newsroom, as well as behind the scenes in news production. She was also a writer for San Angelo Lifestyles Magazine and has even served as a rodeo correspondent. She currently hosts the “Concho Valley Live” news and interview show on KLST.

With a passion for being in the field and in the middle of the action, Scott’s favorite topics to cover include include agriculture, western lifestyle, rodeo, crime, border issues, and military and law enforcement-related stories. Some of her favorite aspects of being a reporter are the opportunities to learn something new every day and getting to meet people.

“Over my career, I’ve covered a variety of stories, but one of the specific beats I worked extensively for about six years was courts and crime,” Scott said. “I’ve interviewed so many people who have lost loved ones. Not going to lie: It’s difficult and can sometimes make you feel like an icky person. So how do you do it respectfully? I address this topic and many more in my book.”

She has also been a keynote speaker and panelist at multiple journalism and media seminars at universities – and she was an invited speaker at the inaugural Human Trafficking Awareness Summit held in San Angelo in 2022.

In 2023, Scott was honored with “20 Under 40” recognition by the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce.
