New Equipment Expanding Ram Radio’s Reach

October 22, 2024

Recent improvements to Angelo State’s Ram Radio internet station are allowing the ASU student hosts to reach their largest and most widespread audience since the station debuted in 2001.

The new upgrades will also ensure that the students get an enhanced learning experience as they hone their talents on industry-standard equipment and software, which will give them a big advantage when they graduate and start their careers. The upgrades feature new equipment for both the Ram Radio Studio and the Podcast Studio, including:

“Our equipment is now right in line with what professional radio stations have,” said Zack Carlock, ASU instructor and director of Ram Radio. “The only difference is that they are running a terrestrial signal to a big antenna while we run our signal straight to the internet.”

“One of our students went to intern at a radio station here in San Angelo,” he added, “and he was able to step out of our station and right into that station knowing exactly what to do and how everything works. His training only took an hour. It was going to be a paid internship for one semester, but he ended up staying an entire year.”

The new equipment also allows the Ram Radio programming to simultaneously run live online, on the Ram Radio Facebook page and on the Ram Media YouTube channel. Students can also use the Podcast Studio for class assignments.

With a current roster of seven student show hosts, Ram Radio broadcasts daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., featuring a mix of music, interviews, podcasts, sports and weekly live remote broadcasts from the Houston Harte University Center every Thursday starting at 11 a.m.

Each of the hosts also produces at least one podcast – and new episodes are available daily on the Ram Radio Facebook page.
