J.D. Raggio loves Angelo State.
In fact, he loves ASU so much he works as a campus tour guide so he can tell visitors about all his university has to offer.
“When I toured ASU, the tour guides here made it feel like this school cared about the person,” J.D. said. “That’s the main reason I became a tour guide. I want people to know this school will be there for them when they need it to be.”
A communication major from Marion, J.D. was familiar with ASU even before stepping onto campus.
“My older sister went to ASU, so I came and toured,” he explained. “This place felt the most like home to me. I know it’s really cliché, but you can really feel it. I knew this was where I was going.”
During his visit, J.D. was able to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Ram TV studios.
“It was really cool to see the Ram TV studios before I even came,” J.D. said. “I joined Ram TV officially last November. Not only is it a paid position, but we get that experience people are looking for.”
“We do all the hands-on work at ASU sporting events,” he continued. “We do the play-by-play. We do the color commentary. It’s all student run. If you start working with Ram TV as a freshman, you can have 400-500 games under your belt before you graduate. I’m working as many games as I can to get 100-200 under my belt, because even that is more experience than what most people would come out with.”
When J.D. isn’t giving tours or working for Ram TV, you can find him assisting at other Admissions events as a Rambassador, or on the rugby pitch.
“ASU basically has anything anyone could like,” J.D. said. “And if we don’t, you can make a new club. It’s one of the things I love. ASU gives you so many different opportunities to get involved.”
“My favorite part about ASU is my rugby team,” he continued. “I played sports in high school, and I missed the camaraderie. It’s why I joined Ram Rugby. The brothers I have now are an added bonus.”
“I want people to know this school will be there for them when they need it to be.”
And while J.D. is experiencing all the opportunities Angelo State can offer, the kinship he’s found in the Ram Family is unmatched.
“People here accept all the different cultures, because we’re a super-diverse school,” he said. “People don’t care what you look like or what you do, but get to know who you are as a person. That’s pretty cool.”
