You are in a unique position to be a positive support system for students on campus.
You are on the front lines of interactions and engagement with students and are vital in shaping a healthy and safe campus community. Due to this position of influence, Counseling Services would like to provide you with support and resources to feel competent when navigating students struggling with mental health concerns.
Don’t rush to judgment.
Address your concerns in private, highlight specific observations, attempt to communicate you’re coming from a place of concern.
Allow student time to express themselves without interruption.
Give empathetic responses, avoid blaming or minimizing.
Research available resources remind them of Counseling Services or ASU Crisis HelpLine.
If necessary seek consultation with Counseling Services. It is important to note that although you can provide us with information about a student, we are unable to confirm their attendance in treatment or provide details about their therapy without a signed release of information form.
If you would like someone from the university to reach out to the concerned individual please fill out a students of concern form.
The best referral is always to walk a student over to Counseling Services. If that option is unavailable offer to call to schedule an appointment. If you deem the situation an emergency call campus police or the ASU Crisis HelpLine at 325-486-6345 while still in their presence.
Counseling Services can provide customized training for your department on a variety of mental health issues. Please see Outreach for more information.
