911 Lifeline Law
The 911 Lifeline Law encourages underage individuals to seek help for suspected alcohol poisoning or other related emergencies without fear of criminal penalties.
Commonly, teenagers who engage in underage drinking are hesitant to seek help for themselves or for their peers in dangerous situations where someone may have alcohol poisoning.
This law provides “limited immunity from prosecution for a person under 21 years of age who reports a medical emergency, i.e., a possible alcohol overdose, for that person or for another minor” under the following conditions:
- The minor is the first person to make a request for medical assistance
- The minor remains on the scene until medical assistance arrives
- The minor cooperates with medical assistance and law enforcement personnel
Signs of Alcohol Poisoning
- Confusion
- Vomiting
- Seizures
- Slow breathing
- Breathing that’s not regular
- Skin that looks blue, gray or pale
- Low body temperature
- Trouble staying conscious or awake
If you think that someone has alcohol poisoning, call 911 to seek medical care right away.
