Increase the breadth and depth of your knowledge in the biological sciences.
Biology is a dynamic and diverse science of discovery. Our comprehensive biology master’s program covers field biology, biology research, biology education and other related fields, and you can tailor your degree plan to fit your career interests or to prepare for advancing into a biology Ph.D. program. Thesis and non-thesis options are available, depending on your educational and career goals.
You will also gain practical experience by conducting high-level research with our award-winning faculty, and you can earn graduate credit as you explore biology and natural history in Europe and Central America in our summer study abroad programs.

What Can You Do With a Biology Degree?
Our biology master’s degree graduates have gone on to careers at the Centers for Disease Control and Smithsonian Institute, and as researchers, field biologists, curators and university professors.
The vast majority of our graduates enter Ph.D. programs or become professional biologists in industry or government agencies within a year of graduation.
Dynamic Facilities
The five branches of our Angelo State Natural History Collections contain nearly 100,000 specimens of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, plants and genomic resources, and our Mammals Collection is the fourth-largest in Texas. Our ASU Greenhouse includes three different biomes that sustain hundreds of plant species from around the world. These and our other lab facilities offer you extensive resources for hands-on learning and research.
Research Opportunities
The majority of our graduate students are awarded departmental research grants and travel scholarships. These donor-funded programs increase the variety of available research topics and enhance the opportunities for you to grow as a professional biologist. Our department even has a 4WD truck for use in field-based research projects.
Graduate and Teaching Assistantships
Our department awards 3-5 graduate assistantship (GA) and 3-4 teaching assistantship (TA) positions each year. The included stipend can significantly offset the cost of completing your degree while you gain a more in-depth perspective and valuable learning and teaching experience in the biological sciences.
